Article Icon 1Homelessness in Texas

The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development recently released an update on the number of homeless people throughout the country, showing that a record 771,480 people—or about 23 of every 10,000—did not have stable housing last year.

While Texas ranked sixth among states with the most homeless people, its rate of homelessness is among the lowest in the country, affecting 9 of every 10,000 residents. The year-over-year rate of growth in the state's homeless population (2.2%) is also well below the national average (18.1%).

Most of the 27,987 people in Texas without stable housing are in the state's large metro areas. Dallas has the largest homeless population (3,718), followed by San Antonio (3,398), Houston (3,280), Austin (2,975), and Fort Worth (2,463).

Article Icon 1Cruz Challenges Vance to Cotton Bowl Bet

In a Tuesday social media post, Sen. Ted Cruz challenged Vice President-elect JD Vance, who currently represents Ohio in the U.S. Senate, to a friendly bet on the outcome of Friday's College Football Playoff semifinal matchup between UT and Ohio State.

"Loser brings beer & food from his home state & delivers it wearing the winning jersey?" he inquired. Vance quickly agreed, asking his followers, "Which Texas ice cream should I have Ted bring when the Buckeyes win?"

Some Aggies fans encouraged Cruz to go to Friday's game, hoping the so-called "Cruz Curse"—a pattern of Texas teams losing games the state's junior senator attends—would lead to a loss for the Longhorns, their hated rival.

According to the latest odds, Ohio State is favored to beat Texas by 6 points.

Article Icon 1Jimmy Carter Look-Alike Remembered by Texas Family

As the nation mourns the passing of former President Jimmy Carter, a Central Texas family is remembering the legacy of World War II veteran Ed Beheler, who gained international fame in the 1970s for his uncanny resemblance to the 39th president.

Beheler was a resident of Elm Mott and worked at the Veterans Affairs office in Waco when he won a national Jimmy Carter look-alike contest in the 1970s. He quit his job and turned his newfound fame into roles portraying Carter in movies and commercials.

His films include Hot Shots! Part Deux, The Last Boy Scout with Bruce Willis, and The Lonely Guy with Steve Martin. After appearing in a commercial for Chick-fil-A, he was given free meals at their restaurants for the rest of his life.

Although Beheler met President Carter several times, he never took a photo with him due to Secret Service restrictions. His grandson recalls Beheler, who died in 2001 at the age of 82, saying that Carter told him, "Man, you really do like me!"
