Have you ever noticed that when lakes and ponds freeze over, the ice is completely transparent?

In a lake, the top surface of the water starts to freeze first because it is directly exposed to cold air. Liquid water is a mixture of some water molecules, some air, and some minerals. When the water starts to freeze, the water molecules want to bond together to form as tight a crystalline structure as possible. The air and mineral impurities get squeezed out of this structure, and the ice that forms on the surface of the lake is a perfect lattice of frozen water molecules that is totally pure and therefore crystal clear.

As the freezing process cascades downward toward the lake bed, all of the air and impurities keep getting pushed downward, and the ice keeps forming clear.

Now, lakes don't freeze all the way to the bottom. But if they did, eventually there would be nowhere left for the air and impurities to go. The last bit of water would be full of air and minerals, which would freeze looking like a bubbly cloud - which you've probably noticed in normal ice cubes!
