Initial reports suggested the two sides couldn't agree on the length of a potential contract, but a statement from owner and general manager Jerry Jones indicated that talks never reached the negotiation stage. Coming off a 48-32 loss to the Green Bay Packers in the playoffs last year, the Cowboys struggled this season. They finished 7-10 after losing several players to injuries, including quarterback Dak Prescott, wide receiver CeeDee Lamb, and defensive end DeMarcus Lawrence. During the season, Jones publicly indicated he was seriously considering renewing McCarthy's contract. Just a few days ago, the organization denied the Chicago Bears permission to interview McCarthy for their head coach vacancy. McCarthy ends his tenure with the Cowboys with a 49-35 record, including one playoff win. Jones stated that the search for a new head coach would begin immediately. | Criminal Sends Fake Jury Notices to His Own Trial Zul Mohamed, a candidate for Carrollton mayor in 2020 who was charged with mail ballot fraud in the contest, is now suspected of sending fraudulent jury duty notices to at least 28 recipients for his Dec. 9 trial on the aforementioned charges. Mohamed's trial was in Denton County, but he allegedly sent the fake notices to residents in Dallas and Tarrant counties. Investigators identified his fingerprints on at least three of the notices. During a search of his home, authorities found shredded card stock matching the materials used for the fake postcards. Mohamed was convicted on 25 counts of possessing voters' ballots without authorization and 81 counts of fraudulently requesting mail-in ballots. He was sentenced to four years in prison and 10 years of probation. He has now been charged with impersonating a public servant. "While he's in prison, I hope he takes advantage of that and finds a new line of work because he's not very good at this," Denton County Sheriff Tracy Murphree said. | Texas Leads Nation in Renewable Energy According to data from the U.S. Energy Information Administration analyzed by consulting firm Cleanview, Texas leads the nation in wind and solar power generation capacity and ranks second to California in battery storage capacity. The state has 42,000 megawatts (MW) of wind power, 22,000 MW of solar farms, and 6,500 MW of industrial-scale battery capacity installed. Combined, this represents roughly 80% more renewable energy generation capacity than second-place California. Rapid growth across these sectors over the past five years has fueled the state's emergence as a leader in renewable energy, which now accounts for about 30% of the electricity generated in Texas. Since 2019, wind power has grown 50%, solar power has grown 800%, and battery storage has grown 5,500%. Battery storage is likely to be a hot topic in the state legislative session. ERCOT, the Texas power grid operator, has estimated that capacity could reach 16,000 MW by the end of the year. | | Flying together with our sponsor Stay warm and hydrated this winter with LMNT's limited-time Chocolate Medley!
