| | WHAT WE'RE WATCHING | | 🛢 Trump promised to reverse Biden's last-minute offshore oil drilling ban. Earlier this week, President Joe Biden banned essentially all new offshore drilling on America's coasts, a total of 625 million acres. President-elect Trump immediately said he would end the ban upon taking office, calling it "ridiculous." But Biden's method — using an old law instead of an executive order — means it could take time for Trump to reverse it. | 🚦The Laken Riley Act passed a major hurdle. The Senate voted overwhelmingly (84-9) to proceed to a debate on the bill, which would require ICE to arrest illegal migrants for theft and other crimes. While the bill is now open to amendment, enough Democrats have said they would vote for it in its original form to pass. If that happens, Donald Trump will sign it into law. | 👍🏻 Senate confirmation of Trump's nominees is moving, albeit slowly. Committee chairs are readying hearings for Trump's cabinet nominees; Sen. Mike Lee (R-UT) is holding hearings on Doug Burgum (Interior Secretary) and Chris Wright (Energy Secretary). However, many hearings have been delayed due to a lack of paperwork from the nominees. Only Marco Rubio (Secretary of State) and a few others are likely to be installed on Trump's first day in office. | 🧂 SALT is becoming an issue for Republicans. Republicans from blue states — a crucial faction of their House majority — hope that Trump will push for an increase in the state and local tax deduction (SALT), which was capped at $10,000 per year in 2017. Trump is reportedly considering offering to raise the cap to $20,000, but fiscal-hawk Republicans oppose the move. |

| | 🦅 THE EXECUTIVE | President Joe Biden canceled his trip to Italy to meet the Pope due to the LA wildfires. President-elect Donald Trump invited Sen. John Fetterman (D-PA) for a meeting at Mar-a-Lago; Fetterman accepted, becoming the first Democratic senator to meet with Trump. Incoming White House Chief of Staff Susie Wiles will "not tolerate backbiting," in an apparent attempt to avoid the chaos of the first Trump White House. Donald Trump appointed four long-time loyalists for key White House staffing positions.
