Fed Cuts Interest Rates by .5%

The Federal Reserve cut interest rate by a half-percentage point on Wednesday, signaling more cuts to come as it winds down efforts to combat inflation.

The rates were lowered to a range between 4.75%-5%, cutting short-term borrowing costs for banks and affecting various consumer products such as mortgages, auto loans, and credit cards.

This is the first rate cut in more than four years, following 11 hikes since March 2022.

The major stock market indexes closed slightly down after the news, despite the Dow being up as much as 375 points earlier in the day.

Hezbollah Devices Explode Again in Lebanon

Handheld radios used by Hezbollah exploded across southern Lebanon for a second day on Wednesday, killing and injuring many in the deadliest day of cross-border conflict with Israel in nearly a year.

The blasts, including some near funerals for Tuesday's victims, followed a similar attack on Hezbollah pagers the previous day that also resulted in numerous casualties. See photos and videos here.

While Israeli officials have not commented, security sources attribute the operation to Israel's Mossad spy agency.

The attacks have reportedly thrown Hezbollah into disarray and heightened fears of a wider regional conflict, with the group vowing retaliation against Israel.

Tupperware Files for Chapter 11

Iconic houseware brand Tupperware filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection Tuesday, seeking court approval to continue operating and facilitate a sale.

In a statement, Tupperware CEO Miguel Fernandez stated that the company explored numerous strategic options to save the brand but challenging economic conditions made it extremely difficult.

Tupperware became popular by selling through Tupperware parties, a direct-to-consumer marketing model, achieving the same level of brand recognition as Kleenex and Teflon. However, in recent decades, Tupperware has experienced declining sales, increased competition, and market limitations.

The 78-year-old company experienced a brief resurgence during COVID-19 with people confined to their homes, but that sales surge quickly dwindled.
