| | | | Good morning. Donald Trump has come out strong on foreign policy, trying to get concessions and deals from America's allies. | | WHAT WE'RE WATCHING | | ๐บ๐ธ 1. Biden extended protections for 800,000 migrants. The Biden administration granted an 18-month extension of Temporary Protected Status (TPS) to over 600,000 Venezuelans and 230,000 Salvadorans, despite criticism that such renewals often become automatic and indefinite. With President-elect Trump promising to scale back TPS and focus on mass deportations, Biden's last-minute extension could complicate Trump's plans. | ๐ฉ๐ช 2. Elon Musk spoke with AfD's leader, angering EU allies. In a nearly 75-minute conversation, Musk heaped praise on the Alternative for Germany's (AfD) Alice Weidel and strongly encouraged Germans to vote for her party in next month's elections. The AfD is currently a clear second in the polls, coming in ahead of the governing left-wing Social Democrats. | ๐ฎ๐ฉ 3. Indonesia formally joined the BRICS alliance. While the anti-Western BRICS economic bloc started as a five-member grouping — Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa — it has significantly expanded in recent years to include countries like Iran. Indonesia, home to nearly 300 million people and the world's largest Muslim population, greatly expands the group's scope. | ๐จ๐ณ 4. China's foreign minister is touring Africa. While Chinese foreign ministers almost always travel to Africa for their first trip of the year, this one comes on the heels of President Joe Biden's visit in December in an attempt to gain a stronger foothold on the continent. But China, actively increasing its influence and eyeing military expansion in countries like Chad, holds the advantage. | |

| | ๐ช๐บ EUROPE | A study found that foreigners in the UK are three times as likely to be arrested for sexual crimes than British citizens. Poland announced it would not abide by an ICC warrant to arrest Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu if he visited Auschwitz for a memorial event. Jean-Marie Le Pen, the father of Marine Le Pen and the French populist-right, died this week at 96. The UK is desperate to give up control of the Chagos Islands to Mauritius before President-elect Donald Trump, who opposes the transfer, takes office. Russian President Vladimir Putin is setting up a meeting with President-elect Donald Trump.

| | How serious is Trump's Manifest Destiny? | | What's happening: President-elect Donald Trump caught the world's attention this week by leaving open the possibility of using economic pressure and/or the American military to take control of Greenland. This comes on the heels of other statements indicating a desire to absorb Canada and regain control of the Panama Canal. | Bargaining: Trump once called dealmaking his "art form," and it's important to view his statements in this light. Trump very likely has no desire to send the military to conquer any of these locations; however, all three have something he wants. | Canada: Canadians overwhelmingly do not want to be American. However, the Great White North has high tariffs on American goods while bemoaning America's protectionism. Trump is likely taking a strong position as a negotiating tactic to sway Canada to drop those tariffs… | ๐ This article is for members only | |

| | Britain's soft approach to brutal Muslim rape gangs | | What's happening: Dozens of mostly Pakistani men have been investigated for running child rape gangs in the United Kingdom. They would coerce young girls, get them addicted to drugs and alcohol, and then pass them around. By the 2020s, hundreds of suspects had been arrested. | Back in the spotlight: Late last year, a Labour government minister blocked a local request for a government-led inquiry into rape gangs, with Safeguarding Minister Jess Phillips saying it should be done on a local level. Musk's tirade: That attracted the scorn of Elon Musk, who also accused Prime Minister Keir Starmer of covering up the investigation.
| "Racist" accusations: Many criminals were not investigated because police were concerned about seeming racist, as most gangs were Pakistani and most victims were white. Police were told to arrest other ethnicities… | ๐ This article is for members only | |
