| | WHAT WE'RE WATCHING | | 🇫🇮 Finland seized a Russian tanker accused of cutting undersea cables. A Russian tanker traveling through the Baltic Sea was found to have slowed significantly over a key submarine cable between Finland and Estonia at the same time the cable was damaged. Finnish authorities took control of the vessel, and Estonia launched patrols. This is the third cable that has been damaged in 2024. | 🇦🇿 Azerbaijan accused Russia of shooting down a civilian airliner. Earlier this week, an Azerbaijani flight made an emergency landing in Kazakhstan, causing the plane to crash. Around 40 died, and dozens more were injured. Azerbaijani and American officials, however, are pointing the finger at Russian air defenses in Chechnya, which they claim accidentally targeted the jet. Russia says the flight was rerouted due to fog. | 🇬🇹 Guatemala signaled it would accept deported migrants from America. In order to successfully carry out a mass deportation program, President-elect Donald Trump will need cooperation from other countries to accept migrants. Guatemala has become the first country to signal its openness to taking deportees. While it does not have the most citizens illegally in the US — that's Mexico, with over 5 million — it still has around 724,000. | 🇰🇷 The South Korean parliament impeached the acting president. Just two weeks after President Yoon Suk Yeol was suspended from his duties following his chaotic martial law declaration, opposition lawmakers impeached Acting President Han Duck-soo over his refusal to appoint Constitutional Court justices. The ruling People Power Party boycotted the vote, resulting in a 192-0 decision to remove the acting president. |

| | 🇪🇺 EUROPE | Russia targeted Ukraine in a massive Christmas Day attack, launching over 180 drones and missiles. The terrorist who attacked a Christmas market in Germany was granted asylum by the German government after he had made terroristic threats. Twelve people were killed in an ammunition factory explosion in Turkey. Italy is working "tirelessly" to free one of its journalists who has been detained in Iran.
