Dallas police chief Eddie Garcia has announced his retirement from law enforcement, lured away to a job in Austin public safety. Garcia has acquired the reputation of being a fixer, and he takes on a staffing crisis in Austin, beginning in November. Garcia agreed to a contract extension as Dallas police chief less than six months ago after the city saw three consecutive years of crime reduction. He rejoins Austin City Manager T.C. Broadnax, who hired him for his role in Dallas. | John Grisham, Others Urge Halt to Execution In a bipartisan effort, more than 80 Texas lawmakers are urging Gov. Greg Abbott to grant clemency to Robert Roberson, scheduled for execution next month. Other public figures, including novelist John Grisham, have joined the call for clemency for Roberson, who was convicted of his two-year-old daughter’s death in 2002. At that time, the prosecution argued that Shaken Baby Syndrome was the only plausible cause of death, given the brain trauma Roberson’s daughter experienced. New scientific evidence suggests other injuries could have led to her death. Roberson’s advocates are also claiming that he was “prejudged as suspicious” because of his autism symptoms. Roberson is scheduled for lethal injection on October 17. | El Paso Icon Dies at 92 Jay J. Armes, El Paso’s famous “private eye,” has died at 92. In the post announcing his death, Armes’ son referred to the renowned detective, actor, author, and businessman as a real-life superhero. He even had an action figure modeled after him. Armes lost both of his hands in a childhood accident, and he wore two hooks for the rest of his life, further adding to his legendary status. Among other high-profile cases, Armes rescued actor Marlon Brando’s son when he was taken to Mexico. The El Paso community has often associated Armes with an iconic billboard near his office and mansion in the Lower Valley. He raised exotic animals, including tigers and monkeys, at his home.
