| Good Morning! On this day in 1876, “Wild Bill” Hickok, one of the greatest gunfighters of the American West, was murdered in Deadwood, South Dakota, while playing poker. He was holding aces and eights, the dead man’s hand. The House announced on Thursday that a statue of music legend Johnny Cash will be revealed at a dedication ceremony at the Capitol next month. Cash’s classic “I’ve Been Everywhere” would make a nice addition to the festivities. We hope you enjoyed reading today's Flyover. Let us know how we're doing by replying to this email. | U.S., Allies Swap 24 Prisoners with RussiaThe U.S., Western allies, and Russia exchanged 24 prisoners in Turkey on Thursday in the largest exchange of detainees since the Cold War. Wall Street Journal reporter Evan Gershkovich, former U.S. Marine Paul Whelan, and Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty journalist Alsu Kurmasheva were among those exchanged for eight Russian prisoners, including Vadim Krasikov, a Russian assassin held in Germany. The prisoner swap was the result of months-long negotiations involving the U.S., Turkey, Germany, Russia, Poland, Slovenia, Norway, and Belarus. The deal required concessions from European allies, including the release of the Russian hitman. The complete list of prisoners exchanged freed 12 German and Russian activists and four U.S. detainees from a Russian prison in return for the West sending eight Russian prisoners back to Moscow. | Hidden Bomb Killed Hamas LeaderHamas leader Ismail Haniyeh was killed by a bomb hidden in his room two months prior in a heavily guarded Iranian compound, and not by an airstrike as originally reported, sources said Thursday. Hamas and Iran have blamed Israel for the killing, but Israeli leaders haven’t claimed responsibility. However, Israeli intelligence reportedly briefed Western allies about the operation afterward. Sources say Israeli operatives in Iran remotely detonated the bomb after confirming Haniyeh's presence in the room. The Hamas leader was visiting Iran for the inauguration of its new president. The operation has raised fears of a wider war in the region, with Hezbollah's leader Hassan Nasrallah warning of a "new phase" in the conflict, vowing a “very well-studied retaliation.” | U.S. Makes History in ParisGymnast Simone Biles secured her second individual all-around gold medal on Thursday, extending the U.S. women's gymnastics team's remarkable streak of individual champions that began at the 2004 Athens Olympics. Katie Ledecky also bolstered her Olympic legacy with a victory in the 1500m freestyle and a second-place finish in the 4x200-meter freestyle relay. She's won eight gold medals and 13 overall, making her the most decorated U.S. female athlete. The U.S. now has more than 3,000 combined medals in the Summer and Winter Games, more than doubling the second-place Soviet Union's tally of 1,204, solidifying its status as the all-time leader in Olympic achievement. The 2024 Paris Olympics have been a massive success for NBC, generating over $1.25 billion in ad revenue with a 77% increase in ratings compared to the previous Games.
